Searching the Database
The primary purpose of this website is to search our extensive database of Organizations that provide services to the public. There are two different types of searches. The Services search allows you to find Organizations based upon the services they provide. The Organization search allows you to find Organizations based upon their name.
To initiate a search, click on the appropriate button below Search by... in the left margin of the page. The next page will contain entry fields that you must fill. Then you press the Search button to list the Organizations that match the search criteria entered. To get detailed information about an organization, click on the Organization’s Name.
Searching by Services
The Search by Services option allows you to find an Organization based upon the services they provide. The first required entry is the county in which you (or the person for whom you are looking) resides. If you do not know the county, you may enter a city name and the program will find the county. Note that you must enter a complete and accurate city name or a county may not be found.
The second entry field is for the zip code. In this case, the zip code does not restrict the results of the search. Instead, it will order the results by the distance from the target zip code. In other words, Organizations which meet the search criteria and have an address closest to the zip code will be shown at the top of the list. You are not required to enter the zip code – it is an optional field.
The third entry field is for the key words or phrase that describes the service that you need. You may enter a single word, such as Food. To narrow the search more, you may want to enter more words, like Food for Seniors or Food Pantry. You should refrain from entering AND or OR or putting quotation marks around the search phrase as you may be accustomed to in other programs. Instead, pick the modifier from the drop-down list below the search words. From this list, you can have the program look for ‘Any Words’, ‘All Words’ or ‘Complete Phrase’. These items are self-descriptive. Pick the one that is most appropriate. If a search for a Complete Phrase returns no results, you may want to change this modifier to ‘All Words’.
After you finish entering the search criteria, press the Search button.
Searching by Organization
The Search by Organization option allows the user to find an Organization by name. The first required entry is the county in which you (or the person for whom you are looking) resides. If you do not know the county, you may enter a city name and the program will find the county. Note that you must enter a complete and accurate city name or a county may not be found.
The second entry field is for the Organization name. You are not required to enter the entire name or even the beginning of the name. Instead, you may enter words that make up the Organization’s name. For example, you may just enter Police to find all police departments that cover the county specified. You may also enter portions of a name if you are not sure of a spelling. For example, you may just enter Hemo to look for the Hemophilia Association.
After completing the search criteria, press the Search button.
Viewing the Results
When searching by Services, the results will start at the top of the page. When searching by Organization
the results will appear below the entry fields. If your screen resolution is low, you may have to scroll
down to see the results. The name and city of each Organization will be displayed. If you have entered a
zip code, the Organizations will be listed with the nearest at the top of the list. Additionally, the mileage
from the target zip code will follow the city name. To view more information about the Organization, click
on the Organization name.
If you choose to view the detailed Organization information, each listing includes the following
- Agency name
- Telephone numbers
- Office hours
- Description of the services available
- Eligibility restrictions (if any)
- Whether the service is free or the methods of payment
If the results are not what you expect, you can alter the search criteria and search again. If you are searching by Organization scroll to the top of the page and alter the criteria. Then press the search button to replace the current results. If you are searching by Services, you can click on the New Search link at the top of the page to reset the search criteria and enter them anew. If you would prefer just to alter one entry field, press the Back button on the browser’s toolbar.
Printing the Results
You may find that printing from our site results in the right side of the page being truncated. To correct this situation, you must change the page margins. Open the Page Setup... option in the File pull-down menu. Within the displayed dialog window, change the left and right margins to .25 (1/4) of an inch. You may also want to experiment with other printing options such as printing only a selected region or choosing not to print images.
Note that the contents of our site are continually changing. Therefore, we recommend that you only print Organizational information that you need immediately. Please don’t try to build your own catalog of Organizations. Instead, think or our website as an on-line catalog and keep coming back. We realize that you can’t always have a connection to the internet, but we want to make sure that the information you have is as up-to-date as possible.
